My mom was watching the kids one day, and noticed this funny little bump on Gabe's neck. I had never seen it before and, honestly, thought it was an Adam's apple. We took him in to see the doctor and get it checked out. The doctor thought that it was some type of cyst, but that it was non-lifethreatning. He referred us to Dr. Kelly who was a pediatric ENT. After an ultrasound and an appointment with Dr. Kelly, they determined that it was a thyroglossal duct cyst. As I understand it, the tyroglossal duct forms when the thyroid descends in a fetus from under the tongue to the lower throat area. This duct dissapears (usually), but Gabe's didn't and got filled with fluid. They just had to take it out to prevent infection. We set up an appointment to get it surgically removed on March 3.
We had to get to the hospital at 6:00 am on March 3 to get checked in and prepped for the surgery. Gabe thought it was pretty cool and had fun playing with all of the toys. Primary Children's has the whole surgery process down to a smooth sailing system. We opted to get some Versed for Gabe to take before they took him back for surgery. He was so funny once he took the medicine. He started to giggle, I mean giggle, a few times and it was only made worse by Jeff and I because we, too, started to giggle. It was just so funny. The more Gabe giggled, the more we giggled. The more we giggled, the more Gabe giggled. Do you see the problem?
The surgery took about 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete. Gabe cried and cried after the surgery. He had a hard time waking up, but once he got some apple juice and his blankie, he was fine. We had to spend the night in the hospital for observation. Gabe did pretty good and enjoyed all the attention. He loved all the apple juice, popcycles, and PB&J's. He talked everyone's ears off and the nurses thought it was adorable. It is so fun to hear how he views things and what he thought of the whole thing. What a brave little boy!!

It is funny how different boys are from girls. The boys played basketball out back for a bit and ran around. Then each boy got to paint his own car. Thank goodness for washable paint. They also got spiderman masks and had fun running around shooting webs on each other.
Molly had her first birthday party with friends. She invited 5 little friends and Gabe (of course). I thought Gabe would have a hard time with her getting all the presents from her friends and not him. He did really good and his only concern was that he didn't have a gift to give to Molly. Molly is a genuine horse freak. She spends half of her life pretending to be a horse, so I thought it was only appropriate to have a horse party. Everybody got a pair of horse ears and a horsey tail. The girls had so much fun pretending to be horses and playing together.
Since horses like to eat sugar cubes, I thought it would be fun for the girls to build stuff with them. It didn't take long for them to figure out how good they tasted. They would all exclaim how the sugar tickled their tongues. Sorry parents. Your children got lots of sugar at the party.
Molly and Gabe got to pick out their own cakes this year. Molly wanted a horse cake and Gabe wanted a Monster truck cake. I decided to do the pink ice cream cone cakes for Molly's friend party, just cause I wanted to see what they looked like. I had seen them on a website and thought they would be fun. Mine didn't turn out as cute as the ones on the website. It was fun to make the cakes! I really enjoy it, but I have to accept the fact that they look far from perfect.
